"Football combines the two worst things about America: It is violence punctuated by committee meetings". |

| ~George F. Will, Columnist Washington Post | ||
Coach Vince Lombardi Football
isn't a contact sport; it's a collision sport. Dancing is
a contact sport.
"There is no room for second
place. There is only one place in my game, and that's
first place. I have finished second twice in my time at
Green Bay, and I don't ever want to finish second again.
There is a second place bowl game, but it is a game for
losers played by losers. It is and always has been an
American zeal to be first in anything we do, and to win,
and to win, and to win.
"Winning is not a sometime thing;
it's an all the time thing. You don't win once in a while;
you don't do things right once in a while; you do them
right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so
is losing.
"It is a reality of life that men
are competitive and the most competitive games draw the
most competitive men. That's why they are there - to
compete. To know the rules and objectives when they get in
the game. The object is to win fairly, squarely, by the
rules - but to win.
"And in truth, I've never known a
man worth his salt who in the long run, deep down in his
heart, didn't appreciate the grind, the discipline. There
is something in good men that really yearns for discipline
and the harsh reality of head to head combat.
"If you give me anything than less than your best, you're not only cheating yourself, your coaches, your teammates, everybody in Green Bay, and everything pro football stands, for, your also cheating the Maker who gave you the talent."
INTENSITY
You never win a game unless you beat the guy in front of you. The score on the board doesn't mean a thing. That's for the fans. You've got to win the war with the man in front of you. You've got to get your man."
DESIRE
"The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather in a lack of will."
TEAMWORK
* "Teamwork is what the Green Bay Packers were all about. They didn't do it for individual glory. They did it because they loved one another."
WINNING
*
I don't say these things because I believe in
the "brute" nature of man or that men must be brutalized to be combative. I
believe in God, and I believe in human decency. But I firmly believe that any
man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that
moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on
the field of battle - victorious."
• "There's only one way to succeed in anything, and that is to give it everything. I do, and I demand that my players do."
• "If you aren't fired with enthusiasm, you'll be fired with enthusiasm."
• "Once you learn to quit, it becomes a habit."
• "Winning isn't everything--but wanting to win is."
Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant
You take those little rascals, talk to them good, pat them on the back, let them think they are good, and they will go out and beat the biguns."
"You have to be willing to out-condition your opponents."
"Sacrifice. Work. Self-discipline. I teach these things, and my boys don't forget them when they leave."
"The first time you quit, it's hard. The second time,
it gets easier.
The third time, you don't even have to think about it."
"One man doesn't make a team. It takes 11."
"I don't care how much talent a team has -- if the boys don't think tough, practice tough, and live tough, how can they play tough on Saturday?."
If anything goes bad, I did it. If anything goes semi-good, then we did it. If anything goes real good, then you did it. That's all it takes to get people to win football games.
It's not the will to win, but the will to
prepare to win that makes the difference.
You have to play this game like somebody just hit your mother with a two-by-four. ~Dan Birdwell, Defense lineman, Oakland Raiders.
I like to believe that my best hits border on felonious assault. ~Jack Tatum, safety, Oakland Raiders
Speed is not your fastest, but your slowest man. No back can run faster than his interference. ~Jock Sutherland, Pittsburgh Panther Guard
If you don't make a total commitment to whatever you're doing, then you start looking to bail out the first time the boat starts leaking. It's tough enough getting that boat to shore with everybody rowing, let alone when a guy stands up and starts putting his jacket on., Lou Holtz, Coach
I'm not too proud to change. I like to win too much., Bobby Bowden, Florida State University
